A wheel lift raises one axle and rolls the other two wheels

A wheel lift tow truck lifts one axle with a metal yoke that cradles the tires, leaving the remaining two wheels turning on the road. The yoke slides under the front or drive wheels, raises them clear, and the vehicle follows the truck at an angle.
Wheel lifts hook up faster and manoeuvre far better. They work in parallel-parking situations, tight garages, and alleys where a flatbed cannot get itself into position, and they are the routine choice for straightforward front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive cars moving a short distance.

All-wheel drive takes the decision out of your hands

Manufacturers are explicit about AWD. Subaru's owner guidance states that a flatbed truck is the only recommended way to properly transport an AWD vehicle, and warns that because Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distributes engine power to all four wheels, improper towing will severely damage the AWD system.
Mazda's owner's manual gives the same instruction in different words: a towed AWD vehicle must have all its wheels off the ground. Mazda cautions that towing an AWD vehicle with either the front or rear wheels on the ground is dangerous, because the drive train could be damaged or the vehicle could trail away from the tow truck and cause an accident. Mazda also rules out sling-type equipment entirely, directing operators to wheel-lift or flatbed gear.
Check your own owner's manual before the truck arrives and tell the dispatcher what it says. That single detail decides which truck is assigned, and getting it wrong turns a tow bill into a drivetrain repair.
